Plenty of great players have won high school basketball championships. Some have even won a few titles back-to-back.
But three championships in three different states? That is something else.
And it’s something that Ace Flagg could achieve this weekend as his Greensboro Day School team competes in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A state championship on Saturday.
A third title would be a remarkable end to Flagg’s already remarkable high school career, which began at Nokomis High School in Newport. As freshmen, he and twin brother Cooper helped lead the Warriors to a Maine Class A state title in 2022, the first ever for the school.
After transferring to basketball powerhouse Montverde Academy, the Flagg brothers helped that Florida school win the Chipotle Nationals, in which nationally ranked high school teams from around the country converge for a national championship. Ace also won a Sunshine Independent Athletic Association state title and put in an MVP performance as part of a prep team while at Montverde, according to the school.
Ace transferred to Greensboro Day in North Carolina for his final year of high school, and the team has gone 30-5 this season to secure the number two seed in the 3A tournament.
No. 2 Greensboro Day will play No. 1 Concord Academy in that state championship game at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Concord has a record of 31-3.
After high school, the next step in Flagg’s basketball journey will be back here in Maine, where he has committed to play for the Black Bears. His eventual arrival in Orono adds further excitement to a UMaine men’s basketball program that is already building momentum this year as a top three team in the America East Conference.
