A Belfast man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of his wife in an incident that also left his mother hospitalized.
Maine State Police and the Winthrop police were called to a home on Giles Road just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
Police found a woman, later identified as 32-year-old Margaux Whittemore of Belfast, dead outside the home and another woman, later identified as 67-year-old Dorothy Whittemore, injured inside.
The suspect, Samuel Whittemore, 34, of Belfast, fled the scene and was later taken into custody by a state police trooper a short distance from the home.
Margaux and Samuel Whittemore were married and lived in Belfast. At the time of the incident, they were visiting Samuel’s parents’ home in Readfield, Moss said.
After an autopsy, the state’s chief medical examiner ruled Margaux Whittemore’s death a homicide. Her cause of death is not being released at this time, Moss said.
Dorothy Whittemore was brought to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where she was initially listed in critical condition. Her condition has since been upgraded, Moss said.
Samuel Whittemore was brought to Maine General Hospital in Augusta for evaluation, and later moved to the Kennebec County Jail where he was charged with murder.
Samuel Whittemore is expected to make his initial appearance in court tomorrow.
