Bangor High School right wing Marc-Andre Perron is one of eight semifinalists for the Travis Roy Award given annually to the top senior player in Class A.
The award is named after the late Yarmouth native who was paralyzed from the neck down in his first game for the Boston University Terriers and became an influential motivational speaker.
“He’s a great kid with a great heart who loves the game,” Bangor coach Quinn Paradis said about Perron. “He plays with the same passion Travis Roy did.”
Perron is joined on the list by Falmouth goalie Brandon White and defenseman Jack Turgeon; Thornton Academy of Saco forward Brady Pecora and goalie Drew Johnson; Biddeford-Massabesic-Old Orchard Beach defenseman Wyatt Labonte; Edward Little of Auburn forward Andrew Clements and Windham-Westbrook-Bonney Eagle forward Sam Foley.
The finalists will be announced after the Class A semifinals and the winner will be named at the banquet in Brunswick on March 22.
Perron had 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 points in 17 games and was Bangor’s second-leading scorer. He was sixth in Class A in points and tied for ninth in goals.
The son of the late UMaine hockey captain Guy Perron was a tri-captain and logged lots of minutes for Bangor. He played in all situations.
Paradis also said Perron is a very good leader.
“He has great ice vision and a high hockey IQ,” added Paradis. “He is just as good a playmaker as he is a scorer. He controls the puck in the offensive zone and he is strong in the defensive zone.”
The only Bangor High player to win the award was current Ram assistant coach Parker Sanderson in 2013.
Foley of Windham-Westbrook-Bonney Eagle was Class A’s leading scorer during the regular season with 44 points on 18 goals and 26 assists.
White posted a 9-2-2 record, a 1.99 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage for the Falmouth Navigators while Johnson was 13-2-1 with a 1.87 GAA and a .913 save percentage for the Thornton Trojans.
Clements was Edward Little’s leading scorer with 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists; Pecora had seven goals and 12 assists for Thornton and Turgeon (1-7-8) and Labonte (1-9-10) anchored their respective blue lines while also chipping in offensively.
