A man has died in the custody of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
Cal Jason Sawyer, 41, of Waterville was arrested on Nov. 18, 2024, on charges of domestic violence aggravated assault, domestic violence assault, obstructing the report of a crime or injury, and violating his conditions of release stemming from an incident on Nov. 1, according to Sheriff Ken Mason.
He was brought to the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta after his arrest, Mason said Tuesday morning.
Sawyer was taken to a medical facility because of a “medical issue” on Feb. 22. After being seen by medical staff, he was returned to the jail.
But his condition worsened on Feb. 23, so Sawyer was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where he was placed in the intensive care unit. Then, on Feb. 25, Sawyer was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he died Saturday, according to Mason.
“Our thoughts go out to the family of Cal Sawyer, during this difficult time,” Mason said.
