Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union will host two of Maine Credit Unions’ upcoming Financial Fitness Fairs, interactive and educational programs designed to help students develop essential money management skills. Sebasticook Valley FCU will host a Financial Fitness Fair at Nokomis Regional High (291 Williams Road, Suite 2, Newport) on Wednesday, April 2 at 9 a.m. Students from Nokomis, Maine Central Institute and Dexter Regional High can participate in the fair.
The second fair will take place on Tuesday, April 8, at Cony High School (60 Pierce Drive in Augusta) at 9 a.m. in partnership with the Kennebec Valley Chapter of the Maine Credit Unions. High school students and eighth graders from Cony High School, Cony Middle School, Richmond High School, Richmond Middle School, Maranacook Community High School, Maranacook Middle School and Maine Arts Academy students are invited to attend.
Since its inception in 2004, Maine Credit Unions’ Financial Fitness Fairs have worked with nearly 80,000 students to encourage smart financial choices and financial literacy. The program is structured as an engaging budget simulation. Students receive a hypothetical career and monthly income and then visit booths representing common expenses, such as housing, transportation, food and entertainment. By filling out a monthly budget form, students must ensure their expenses do not exceed their income.
As a member of the Maine Credit Union League, Sebasticook Valley FCU is committed to supporting youth financial education. Maine Credit Unions have been recognized 18 times with the Desjardins Award for Youth Financial Education, making Maine the most honored credit union system in the country for financial literacy initiatives.
“Teaching financial literacy at a young age is important, but it can also be fun,” said Nicole Robinson, Newport branch manager at Sebasticook Valley FCU and Financial Fitness Fair partner. “Through these Financial Fitness Fairs, students gain confidence and skills needed to make informed financial decisions in the future.”
The event coincides with Financial Literacy Month which emphasizes the importance of financial education for young adults. For more information about the Financial Fitness Fairs, visit the Maine Credit Union League website.
