A man is dead after an “officer-involved” shooting in Oxford County Saturday afternoon.
The shooting occurred after police received a 911 call at 4:43 p.m. Saturday from an 80-year-old man, who reported a domestic assault at 229 Tucker Road in Hartford by his stepson, Eric Newell, 51.
Sheriff’s deputies from both Oxford and Androscoggin counties responded to the call.
“Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation with Newell but were unsuccessful. Newell exited the residence and advanced towards the deputies armed with a knife,” according to a social media post by the sheriff’s office.
Oxford County deputies Reece Rodrigue and Derek MacDonald “issued commands but Newell failed to comply. Rodrigue and MacDonald shot Newell,” according to the post.
Newell did not survive his injuries. Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. The Attorney General’s office will investigate.
