The SAVE Act has been reintroduced to Congress as H.R. 22. In the last Congress, Rep. Jared Golden voted for this confusing and muddied bill. This bill could make it harder for American citizens to vote.
This legislation could disenfranchise some American citizens. Groups who may be affected are: Married women whose names do not match their U. S. birth certificates; U. S. citizens who do not have birth certificates; U. S. citizens with birth certificates from Canadian hospitals or other countries; people who cannot present documents in person to an election official in Maine (people who live overseas, military personnel, some people who are disabled, elderly citizens, at-home caregivers for those with disabilities, and students who go to school in other states).
We already have laws making it illegal for non-citizens to vote. I don’t believe legislation that makes it harder for Americans citizens to vote should be passed.
