Residents of the town of Mexico have voted against reinstating their local police force, opting instead for continued coverage by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
The decision came during a special vote held Tuesday, following the disbandment of the town’s Police Department in August after the retirement of its chief and the departure of the remaining three officers for other jobs.

The vote saw 234 residents favoring county coverage, compared with 88 who supported re-establishing the town’s police force.
Additionally, voters expressed strong support for 24-hour coverage rather than the current 18-hour service.
Town leaders have indicated that maintaining a local police department would cost nearly $1 million annually.
