Maine has some of the oldest housing stock in the nation, meaning the state is full of antique farmhouses.
Thanks to owners’ tasteful updates or total renovations, many of these antique farmhouses are in better condition than ever. We rounded up for that you could purchase at a range of price points around Maine.
This rustic riverside home

$389,000, Rumford
This 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom farmhouse sits on 7.5 acres and includes more than 400 feet of waterfrontage along the Androscoggin River. It was built in 1830, and though the home still has some antique touches like its wood stove, it has been extensively remodeled.
“It’s been completely renovated from what it was,” said listing agent Tara Peirce of Badger Peabody & Smith Realty.
Given its rural location between the Sunday River and Black Mountain ski areas, the home comes in at a more affordable price than many restored farmhouses and offers plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. There’s direct access from the property to hiking trails, kayaking and cross-country skiing. The property also includes an antique, two-story barn for storage.
This fixed-up Bangor home

$419,000, Bangor
This farmhouse in Bangor sits on 1.5 acres in the city’s outskirts, near the northeast Penjajawoc Preserve. It’s a charming 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom that was built in 1886 but completely renovated in 2022, listing agent Nicole Drake said.
“It was taken down to the studs, … they did try to open up the farmhouse as much as they could,” Drake, an agent with NextHome Experience, said.
Now, the place has all-new insulation, flooring, electrical, septic and plumbing systems among other updates. It’s available turn-key, and would suit somebody after a rustic farm lifestyle while still living minutes from the amenities a city can offer.
As seen in “Country Living”

$575,000, Sedgwick
This historic 3-bedroom, 1.5 bath farmhouse on 10.5 acres was built in 1800, before Maine was a state. It has been “meticulously maintained” since then, and could be available turn-key. Recent upgrades include fresh paint, heat pumps, an updated farmer’s porch and a renovated kitchen, according to its online listing.
The kitchen balances pops of color from its painted cabinets and Moroccan zellige tile backsplash with smooth marble countertops and rustic exposed wood beams, and was featured in media outlets including Country Living Magazine, according to listing agent Emilie Cole.
This homage to … Coca Cola?
$575,000, Brunswick
Speaking of kitchens … one of the more curious offerings on the market right now is this restored 1834 farmhouse in Brunswick. It has 4-bedrooms, 2-bathrooms and sits on a dead-end road overlooking a pond in its backyard, according to its online listing. It still has its antique hardwood floors, a brick fireplace and cookstove accents from when it was constructed, but is upgraded with a whole house generator, composite siding and a 2-car garage.
Interestingly, part of its renovation appears to be a kitchen styled like a 1950s diner and accented with Coca-Cola branded furnishings. The property’s listing agent was unavailable to comment on those accents and whether they might be available turn-key.
