Word stemming from the media on Thursday points towards Premier League outfit Newcastle United reigniting the club’s pursuit of a key winter target ahead of next season.
The player in question? Diego Carlos.
Magpies supporters will of course be altogether familiar with Carlos’ name, after the no-nonsense defender was hotly tipped for a move to Tyneside throughout the January transfer window.
In the end, a deal was evidently not forthcoming, as the transfer team at St. James’ Park were left with little choice but to change targets, ultimately landing Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion.
As alluded to above, though, if the latest speculation in the press over the course of the last 24 hours is anything to go by, then Newcastle do not appear to be ready to admit defeat in their pursuit of Carlos just yet.
As per Goal, the Geordie club remain a ‘strong candidate’ to land the 29-year-old this summer, having kept the lines of communication open throughout the last couple of months.
The one sticking point at present, however, comes in the form of Sevilla’s asking price.
It is understood that Newcastle would be willing to part with a sum of around €35 million to land Carlos, but the La Liga outfit are continuing to stand firm in their €45 million valuation.
Nevertheless, optimism remains that an agreement will ultimately be struck, with the stopper himself keen on the prospect of a move to Tyneside.
Paqueta eyed
Coincidentally, word of Newcastle’s fresh interest in Carlos comes fresh off the back of Eddie Howe and co. being linked with a swoop for yet another Brazilian international earlier in the day.
The Times report that the Magpies are considering reuniting January addition Bruno Guimaraes with former Lyon teammate Lucas Paqueta, with a hefty bid worth around €60 million in the offing ahead of next season.
🚨 Newcastle are lining up a bid of around €60M for Lucas Paqueta from Lyon.
