Arsenal look to be facing competition for PSV winger Cody Gakpo, who is under contract with the Eredivisie outfit until 2026.
Cody Gakpo is a player who has spent his entire career on the books of hometown club, PSV.
The Eindhoven-native has featured on 131 occasions for PSV’s senior side. In these games, he has scored 39 and assisted 33.
Gakpo is had a particularly fruitful 2021/22 season, which saw him notch 21 goals and provide 15 assists in 47 outings across all competitions – a fantastic return for a winger.
Gakpo, who made his senior Netherlands debut in June of 2021, is a natural left-winger. However, he is pretty versatile and is also more than capable of lining out through the middle, too.
Arsenal already have an abundance of wide options in their squad, with Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli generally the preferred choices to start on the left since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure.
However, he would still no doubt be a valuable addition to a side now playing European football in 2022/23.
But, as per Caught Offside, Chelsea have joined Arsenal in the race for the winger.
Somewhat surprisingly, the report adds that both Arsenal and Chelsea have discussed the possibility of using the Dutchman as a left-wing-back.
For Arsenal, this makes little sense as they never really use a back-five anymore, whilst Chelsea do, but already have Ben Chilwell for this role.
