An insight into the future of Manchester United’s midfield has been provided on Tuesday.
Central midfield has been a problem area at Old Trafford for some time now. And after Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic departed for the Serie A earlier this month, Manchester United now have a lack of bodies, as well as a lack of quality, in that department.
Of course, Donny van de Beek has returned to Manchester after an underwhelming loan spell with Everton, and there is an expectation that the Dutchman will be given a second chance at United under his former boss.
However, Ten Hag did play Van de Beek as more of a no.10, meaning United remain short-staffed in the defensive midfield department.
But, according to a report from The Times on Tuesday, Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans is a midfielder who is of interest to Ten Hag, although it is unclear how highly he features on the Dutchman’s shortlist.
Meanwhile, The Times add that Manchester United will resist any offers for Scott McTominay as Ten Hag sees him as a pivotal player in his first-team plans.
Newcastle United are believed to have enquired about the 25-year-old earlier in the window.

Given McTominay’s lack of quality on the ball compared to the midfielders Ten Hag usually works with, it will be interesting to see how the former Ajax boss uses the Scotsman in the forthcoming campaign.
