Sections of roof at Bangor High School that are under construction leaked Tuesday due to heavy rain, forcing staff to close sections of hallways and one classroom.
Students were directed to use other hallways and take the stairs to keep from slipping. One math classroom on the second floor of the school also experienced leaking, so the class was moved to a lecture hall for the day. No one was injured due to the water.
A section of the school with ramped hallways saw the most significant leaking, according to Ray Phinney, Bangor School Department spokesperson. Because the water landed on an uneven tiled surface, the puddles made “small streams,” Phinney said.
Buckets were placed under the leaks, but students occasionally moved them, so the streams would form again, Phinney said.
“Leakage happens when we have heavy rainfall while construction is taking place,” Phinney said. “They’re trying to get everything done as fast as possible before the snow comes.”
The school’s custodial staff cleaned up the water, and the leaking stopped after the rain cleared. The hallways and classroom were opened again on Wednesday.
The construction project on the school’s roof is expected to be completed in mid-November, Phinney said.
