A man in his 60s has been arrested after a Mercedes was driven for more than 20 miles down the wrong side of a motorway, police have said.
Officers say the Mercedes A 200 AMG was driven at “excess speed” along the M4 near Swindon, Wiltshire.
Wiltshire Police say a man from Oxfordshire was detained on suspicion of drink-driving, driving while unfit and dangerous driving.
Acting Inspector Will Ayres said it was a “miracle that nobody was injured”.
Police say they received a call around 3am on Sunday 9 January from a member of the public reporting to have seen the vehicle on the wrong side of the motorway between junctions 14, for Shefford Woodlands, and 15, for Chiseldon.
Officers say they gave chase from junction 16, for Swindon, after spotting the vehicle travelling west on the inside eastbound lane.
Multiple attempts were made to stop the vehicle but the driver continued despite oncoming traffic, according to the police.

The vehicle was stopped close to Leigh Delamere services, near Chippenham.
“We are aware multiple members of the public passed this driver and were understandably exceptionally concerned,” said Acting Insp Ayres.
“Considering the distance travelled by this vehicle on the wrong side of the carriageway, it is a miracle that nobody was injured or involved in a collision.”
