South London singer Cat Burns, whose song Go went viral on TikTok last year and was the fourth most-streamed single of the year, received three nominations.
She is also up for Brits rising star award along with FLO and Nia Archives.
Stormzy, Fred Again and The 1975 also got three nominations.
Central Cee, George Ezra, Arctic Monkeys, Nova Twins, Aitch, Dave, Eliza Rose, Beyonce, Lizzo, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith all received two nods each.
What’s the controversy over the artist of the year award about?
The Brit Awards has faced backlash for having an all-male line-up for the nominees for artist of the year.
The nominees are Central Cee, Fred Again, George Ezra, Harry Styles and Stormzy.
The best male and best female awards were scrapped last year in favour of gender-neutral prizes.
At the time, the Brits said the change reflected its “commitment to evolving the show to be as inclusive and as relevant as possible”.
In response to criticism over the lack of female nominees, the awards released a statement pointing to the women in other categories.
“While it’s disappointing there are no nominations in the Artist of the Year category, we also have to recognise that 2022 saw fewer high profile women artists in cycle with major releases as was the case in 2021,” the statement read.
Who will perform at the awards?
Wet Leg along with Sam Smith and Kim Petras have been announced so far as performers on the night.
Who will host the awards?
Comedian Mo Gilligan will return to host the 2023 awards after a successful stint at the helm of the 2022 show.
Who decides the winners?
Most of the winners are decided by the Brits Voting Academy, which is made up of about 1200 music industry experts, drawn from media, artists, labels, publishers, promoters and more.
The winners of the four genre categories – rock/alternative, hip hop/grime/rap, dance, pop/R&B – will be determined by a public vote via TikTok, which will open on Thursday 19 January at midday.
Who won big last year?
Adele took home three awards last year, with gongs for best song, artist of the year and best album.
Elsewhere, Wolf Alice, Sam Fender, Dua Lipa, Little Simz and Becky Hill also picked up awards, with Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak) taking home international prizes.
