Proud mom! Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest have nothing but love for daughters Annie and Ruby.
The Halloween actress and Guest — who wed in 1984 — became parents for the first time when she and her husband adopted Annie in 1986. A decade later, the couple adopted their second child, Ruby, in 1996.
One year after welcoming Ruby to their family, Curtis opened up about her infertility struggles and why she and This Is Spinal Tap star decided to adopt.
“Adoption was the only way for us to have a family. People who adopt who are fertile have a more difficult decision than when you have no other option,” the Freaky Friday star explained in a 1997 interview with Pact’s Point of View Newsletter. “If you want to be a family, that’s how you’re going to be it. I don’t think you feel like a family until the child is born.”
Curtis shared details of the open adoption process for Annie revealing that she was worried her celebrity status could potentially affect the outcome.
“It probably was different for us than for most others. There’s something that happens to other people when you become very very famous,” she recalled to the outlet. “ It’s a look in their eyes — they’re afraid to look straight at you; they treat you like royalty; they’re very self-conscious. But when we met Annie’s birth mother and she said, ‘Hi, I’m happy to meet you,’ it was like, boom, it was OK. I knew we could adopt.”
While Annie’s arrival was planned, Ruby joined the brood as a “celestial” surprise, according to Curtis.
“It was serendipitous and involved a friend of mine who died last year,” the Oscar winning actress said at the time. “Five or six events came together, all of which resulted in our family growing within four days.”
As Annie grew older, she decided to follow in her parent’s footsteps and pursued a career in the arts. After graduating from Kenyon College, the Los Angeles native became one of the head dance trainers for the A Squared Academy of Dance. In 2019, she tied the knot with Jason Wolf. The nuptials took place in the backyard of her mother’s home.
Ruby, for their part, came out as transgender in 2020 and Curtis has proudly been by their side while advocating for transgender rights.
“Today is the birthday of my trans daughter,” Curtis gushed in March 2022. “I am proud and grateful to be the parent of a trans child and am sending support to all of the trans families across the US who are being targeted in this moment by conservative legislatures.”
In May 2022, Ruby and their partner, Kynthia, walked down the aisle in a cosplay-themed ceremony. The Scream Queens alum dressed up for the special occasion and shared her excitement for the newlyweds.
“YES THEY DO AND DID! MARRIED!,” Curtis gushed alongside a photo of the couple sharing a kiss.
When the Everything Everywhere All At Once star took home her first Oscar award in March 2023, she dedicated the trophy to Ruby.
“Here they are! In support of my daughter Ruby, I’m having them be a they/them,” Curtis announced to Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie while appearing on Today. “They are doing great, and they’re settling in. In my life, I never thought in a million years that I would have these couple days, and I’m very moved by the whole thing.”
