Father-son day! Prince William brought his and wife Princess Kate’s eldest son, Prince George, to cheer on his beloved Aston Villa soccer team on Saturday, April 8.
The Prince of Wales, 40, and his firstborn, 9, sat in a box in the Villa Park stadium in England on Saturday, watching home team Aston Villa take on the visiting Nottingham Forest. While cheering on the Birmingham-based team, the royals twinned in coordinating outfits. Both William and George looked dapper in navy sweaters over blue button-downs. William — who also shares children Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, with Kate, 41 — and George were joined by other special VIPs in the stands. The Duke of Cornwall sat beside the club’s chief executive, Christian Purslow.
Aston Villa — who won Saturday’s match 2-0 — has long been William’s preferred team in the Premier League conference, and he can already see George’s potential as a future team member.
“I reckon he could be [their] all-time leading goal scorer,” the Duke of Cambridge quipped during an appearance on the “That Peter Crouch Podcast” in July 2020. “I can see no reason why not. It would be brilliant.”
He added at the time: “I’m letting him choose his own way [and a team to support]. It’s about finding what fits for him. … I do like the values and the ethos of the [Aston Villa] club. I want them to look after the players and set a good example to the young fans. I want our children, when they go to the match, to come away loving what they’ve seen, enjoying it and seeing their role models behave in a way that we’d all want them to.”
While letting George, Charlotte and Louis figure out their own allegiances, William has taken his eldest children to see many professional soccer and rugby games across England and Wales. George, as second in line for the British throne, has also joined his parents at multiple other public outings in recent years. He is even scheduled to serve as a Page of Honour at his grandfather King Charles III’s official coronation next month.
“His confidence has grown leaps and bounds over the last couple of years,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly in March 2022 of the future Prince of Wales. “He is assertive, self-assured and knows what he wants, and doesn’t hold back on speaking his mind. His personality is really starting to shine.”
The insider added at the time: “Prince George is already showing that he has what it takes to be the future King of England. … Despite the responsibilities he’ll entail in his future role, Kate and William don’t want to see him grow up too quickly. They’re determined to give him as much of a normal childhood as possible and it’s working wonders. He’s such a lovable, down-to-earth little boy.”
