All the right notes! Aubrey O’Day exclusively took Us Weekly with her through a day in her life as she practices her craft — and finds her inner peace.
“The first thing I do is warm up my voice,” the singer, 39, tells Us, sharing that kicking her morning off with music “sets the tone and energy” for the rest of the day. “Also, playing the piano allows me to sharpen that skill,” she adds.
Making sure her vocals are in tip-top shape is the No. 1 priority for the Danity Kane alum, whose latest single, “Unborn Love,” dropped earlier this month. Her afternoons are spent with composer Melissa Vardy, who takes her through “30 minutes of breath work followed by sonically aligning” the Making the Band alum with “energy vibrations through humming.”
Next, it’s off to the studio, where O’Day lays it bare by getting personal in her songwriting.
“My songs ‘Couple Goals’ and ‘Unborn Love’ — which I wrote about my recent miscarriage — are alternative rock,” she tells Us. “So I’m getting back into playing the guitar.”
“Unborn Love” was released just two weeks after O’Day revealed she suffered a miscarriage. On the track, which dropped on March 16, the former reality star opens up about living through “a real-life nightmare” with her former partner amid her pregnancy.
Ahead of the single’s debut, O’Day got candid about the creative process — and how being vulnerable helped her push through the difficult experience.
“I made this song for my own therapy and for any woman in the world who has ever suffered a miscarriage. We are all connected through our experience,” she wrote via Instagram on March 15. “I also want to be clear that our circumstances are all varied, but the grief described felt the same.”
She added, “I hold myself accountable on this song, but also felt I needed to be honest about going through these months of being pregnant and the grief of my miscarriage without a present partner. I truly believe that things don’t happen to you, they happen for you. If you are getting closer to your vision that is usually when you feel the most uncomfortable.. so ultimately I just let the universe lead me on this one.”
Putting pen to paper is a daily ritual for O’Day in multiple forms. She ends each evening by journaling — something she picked up while living in Bali.
“As I wrote my affirmations down, I realized the action itself released my anxiety and left me feeling in a relaxed, positive mental space to fall asleep in,” she shares with Us.
