A Casco man allegedly stole a truck filled with gravestones from a Casco funeral home over the weekend.
Steven Locke, 52, was charged with felony unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, operating with a suspended driver’s license and violating his bail conditions, according to Naldo Gagnon, chief deputy of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Hill Funeral Home on Quaker Ridge Road discovered the truck was missing about 9:53 a.m. Sunday, which Gagnon said had likely been stolen at some point in the previous 12 hours.
The funeral home’s owner, Eric Nelson, told the Portland Press Herald the truck had two unmarked gravestones, an unmarked family memorial and three bases.
The stolen truck was later spotted on Route 302, also known as Roosevelt Trail, in Casco about 12:24 p.m. From there, deputies tracked it down to an address on Heritage Hill Road in Naples, according to Gagnon.
At the time of his arrest, Locke was wanted on 10 arrest warrants and had 10 sets of bail conditions.
He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland on $10,000 bail for the warrants and without bail on the new charges.
Nelson told the Press Herald that the grave markers were returned to the funeral home intact. They are set to be used for interments this spring.
