Former UMaine two-time Atlantic 10 defensive lineman and longtime NFLer Mike DeVito has been added to the Black Bears’ football staff.
DeVito has been named director of player development and alumni relations by head coach Jordan Stevens.
DeVito was a second team All-Atlantic 10 selection his junior year (2005) and first team pick at nose tackle the next year. During his four-year career at UMaine, he registered 112 tackles and 16 sacks.
He went on to sign with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent and spent six years with them until leaving to play for Kansas City, where he played three seasons before retiring after the 2015 season due to health concerns. DeVito suffered two concussions and ruptured his Achilles tendon during his career.
He played in 110 NFL regular season games and had 250 tackles, 5.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He had 22 tackles in nine playoff games.
The 39-year-old has been inducted into the UMaine Sports Hall of Fame and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
“Mike is one of the greatest players to ever play at the University of Maine,” Stevens said in a statement. “His ability to form relationships with our players and alumni make him the perfect fit for this role. Mike is a mentor and will bring tremendous value to what it means to be a Black Bear football player.”
DeVito lives in Hampden with his wife Jessie (Martin) and sons Rocco, Sal and Louie.
