BANGOR — Since its inception in 2012, people around the world have observed World Lung Cancer Day every year on Aug. 1 to raise awareness of lung cancer issues and raise the call for more research funding. Early lung cancer often comes with no symptoms, which is why it is so important to speak with your provider, be honest about your smoking history, and get a scan if you qualify. Early detection is key in a successful treatment plan.
Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers worldwide, claiming more lives annually than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. Early detection is possible with annual low dose screening CTs. “We know screenings save lives and we want to make the process of lung cancer screening easy for both providers and patients” says Amy McClary, BSN, RN, practice manager, Lung Cancer Screening Program, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. “We make sure the patient gets the screening they need, along with appropriate and timely follow up for any pulmonary findings.”
