A man has been accused of stealing religious statues from a Lewiston church.
Matthew Chapman, 37, of Lewiston has been charged with theft and violating conditions of release. More charges are expected, according to the Lewiston Police Department.
Chapman allegedly stole several religious statues at Holy Family Church on Sept. 16.
This comes after vandals targeted three Catholic churches in Lewiston over the last three weeks.
One woman, caught on a surveillance camera, went behind the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, peeked into a window and then threw a rock at it, which bounced off because it was plastic.
Father Daniel Greenleaf of Prince of Peace Parish of Lewiston said another camera showed her throwing a rock through a front window.
Last weekend at Holy Family on Sabattus Street, someone broke two of the five small statues facing the Virgin Mary.
Then on Saturday morning, a parishioner screamed as she tried to stop someone in a car from stealing the three remaining small statues outside Holy Family.
