BELFAST — Registration is now open for a new, interactive multi-session STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) ocean-focused adventure series starting Oct. 19 at the Belfast Free Library, 106 High Street.
The series “STEAM Team Ocean Xplorers,” a collaborative effort between the University of Cooperative Extension Waldo County’s 4-H program, the Belfast Free Library and the UMaine MARINE Initiative, allows youth ages 8-12 to explore and discover undersea and seaside wonders together with UMaine and local scientists and field experts through hands-on learning experiences and activities offered in monthly sessions. During the program series, which will run through May, youth will dive into aquaponics, aquaculture, marine mammals and marine debris and other topics.
The free program will kick off with Diving into Aquaponics. Held at the Belfast Free library’s Abbott Room on the ground floor, participants will learn all about aquaponics, a type of sustainable farming that combines raising fish in tanks (aquaculture) and growing plants without soil (hydroponics). Participants will practice engineering and observation skills and have the opportunity to get up close with an aquaponics system.
The series is designed to foster discovery, joy and a sense of stewardship and personal growth. It also introduces early STEAM concepts and supports key development through multi-sensorial engagement. The goal of the program is to establish a sense of belonging and inclusion, encourage participants to believe in themselves and teach them ways to promote a healthier ocean throughout Maine’s unique coastline. By providing access to experiential STEAM lessons and activities with the help of presenters and scientists, the program hopes to help participants envision their path to college and a potential future career in STEAM.
Space is limited to 30 children. Registration is required. Visit the program webpage or Belfast Free Library website to sign up.
