Rex Ryan never passes up an opportunity to trash the Patriots and Mac Jones. And even though he’s given the quarterback an ounce of credit this season, the former Jets coach has spent more time trashing the team than praising them.
New England is 1-5 this season after its Week 6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. It was another loss where nothing seemed to go right for the Patriots, and Ryan took the time give his two cents on his rival during Monday’s episode of “Get Up.”
“This team sucks,” Ryan said. “I’m telling you, they stink. They absolutely stink. Where’s the fight? Where’s the energy? Where’s the passion? I don’t see it.”
Jones hasn’t taken the step many thought he would this season and has struggled with finding any sort of chemistry with his receivers. The third-year QB hasn’t received a ton of help from his offensive line, only making his job harder. The offense also hasn’t hit its stride and scoring touchdowns has been difficult for the Patriots this season.
And even though there’s plenty of blame to go around, Ryan did give coach Bill Belichick his flowers.
“I think he’s still getting to their defense. I can say it because, look, I believe this team is terrible, I really do. But Belichick is doing a tremendous job, especially on defense,” he said. “This defense is playing great. They’re not the ones not playing with energy and passion. It’s the other side. I don’t see it.”
The defense has been a bright spot but with injuries to Matthew Judon and Christian Gonzalez, it’s just another difficult hurdle for New England.
The Patriots’ schedule doesn’t get any easier as they go into Week 7 preparing for a matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Ryan probably has plenty of criticism locked and loaded should New England continue losing, and he’ll likely be ready to share his thoughts the day after each game.
