The Lewiston City Council voted to remove its president Tuesday night after she alleged councilors held a secret meeting.
Tuesday night’s agenda items were in response to the last council meeting, when President Linda Scott called out a private bar meeting where four councilors allegedly met and discussed city business.
The four councilors denied any wrongdoing in that meeting with Planning Board members.
Councilor Robert McCarthy said last week some of the topics they discussed were “just a plant to see who we could trust.”
“There was no secret meeting at the Cage,” McCarthy said. “Nothing privileged was discussed.”
Councilor Scott Harriman, Scott and Mayor Carl Sheline disagreed and worried that the private meeting of the four councilors violated Maine’s open meeting laws.
“You can see that people are meeting outside this body, and it’s pretty obvious,” Sheline said.
In a 4-3 vote, Scott was removed as council president and Harriman was censured.
Harriman said he would wear the censure as a badge of honor.
