A crew member was burned after an explosion in the engine room of a cruise ship in Portland on Wednesday.
Portland Fire Chief Keith Gautreau said crews responded to Ocean Gateway around 7:25 a.m. for reports of an explosion in the engine room of the Ocean Navigator cruise ship. Black smoke also was seen coming from the ship.
The ship’s 128 passengers were evacuated.
Portland firefighters and the cruise ship’s fire brigade extinguished the blaze.
Gautreau said one crew member was burned and was taken to Maine Medical Center. The crew member’s condition is unknown at this time.
The ship is being ventilated.
The U.S. Coast Guard is working to determine if the ship is still “seaworthy.”
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
