The Bangor High School and Hampden Academy hockey teams will play a charity game in memory of the late Guy Perron at the Alfond Arena in Orono on Wednesday, Dec. 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
It will be preceded by a game between the Maine Junior Black Bears and Brewer Youth Hockey that will begin at 5:15 p.m.
The high school players will wear commemorative jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game and presented to the winning bidders after the game, along with other auction items. Proceeds will go to the Guy Perron Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Purple Iris Foundation in memory of Perron and Todd Cray.
The Purple Iris Foundation helps raise awareness, provide support and give help to individuals and families affected by cancer.
Perron, who died of pancreatic cancer on May 2, was a two-year captain at UMaine who went on to have a long coaching career that included stints as a UMaine men’s assistant hockey coach, the head coach of the Black Bear women’s team, and a head coach and assistant for the boys team at Bangor High School.
He was also previously an assistant for the men’s team at Dartmouth College and the general manager and head coach of the North American Hockey League’s Chicago Freeze. He also served as a scout for the National Hockey League’s Colorado Avalanche and was the director of hockey operations for the Maine Junior Black Bears program.
Cray, who died of pancreatic cancer on July 18, 2017, was the father of former Hampden Academy hockey player Dylan Cray.
The Guy Perron Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a Bangor High School senior student-athlete.
Bangor coach Quinn Paradis and Hampden Academy coach Zach Wilson credited Omekia Lagassie with the idea for the game. She is the general manager of the Maine Junior Black Bears.
“It’s for a great cause,” said Paradis, who had Perron as his assistant for two seasons.
He said Perron was a “fantastic guy off the ice as well as on the ice” and that he was a positive influence at all levels of hockey in the area.
Wilson said many of Perron’s former teammates will be in attendance at the game.
“It should be a great night,” Wilson said.
