A Mount Desert teenager died Thursday evening after his car collided with another vehicle on Route 3 in Trenton.
Gage Johnson, 19, was driving a Volkswagen GTI south on the highway toward Mount Desert Island when he lost control of the vehicle around 6 p.m., according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. Speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
Johnson passed another southbound vehicle in the northbound lane but then lost control of his car as he steered back toward the southbound lane, according to police. The car veered back into the northbound lane and spun around 180 degrees before crashing into a northbound Honda Accord.
Johnson died at the scene of the collision. The driver of the Honda, Ashley Gardner, 28 of Bar Harbor, and her passenger Nathaniel Gardner, 30, suffered injuries that are not life-threatening. Ashley Gardner was taken to the local hospital in Ellsworth and Nathaniel Gardner was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
