Former Miller Drug owner recovering after being struck by car

The former owner of Miller Drug in Bangor is still recovering at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle last week. Bernard “Billy” Miller, 89, was struck by a vehicle as he was crossing York Street in Bangor around 5:30 p.m. Jan. 22, according to Bangor police. He was walking toward Congregation Beth Israel to attend an evening prayer service. Miller, a Brewer resident, was brought by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center where he remains in stable condition as he recovers from his injuries, according to Berney Kubetz, Miller’s lawyer and longtime friend. Kubetz said Miller is considered “an icon in the Bangor community” for launching Miller Drug, a local pharmacy and for his involvement in several community organizations including the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, the Bangor Band, Kiwanis and a local soup kitchen. Miller and his wife, Gloria Miller, started Miller Drug on State Street in 1957 and ran the local pharmacy for 55 years before retiring in 2012. The Millers left the business to Affiliated Healthcare Services, which merged with Miller Drug in 2010 and opened three additional branches under the Miller Drug name.
