A group of kids allegedly started a fire in an abandoned Eddington home.
A witness called dispatchers about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to report children walking onto an abandoned property on Clewleyville Road, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
It’s one of two abandoned properties on Clewleyville Road, and both had been targets of vandals over the years.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they observed people running into the woods from the abandoned property and smoke coming from the home, the sheriff’s office said late Thursday night.
Inside the home deputies found that the children had attempted to light a section of wall insulation ablaze and set off fireworks.
During a search of the home, the deputies found a 15-year-old boy hiding in the basement. A further search of the surrounding area found other children who had been on the property.
The children were released into their parents’ custody.
They have been charged, though the sheriff’s office didn’t immediately release a list of charges.
The attempted arson remains under investigation, and the sheriff’s office is looking into similar activity in the area in recent weeks.
