One man was injured in a shooting over the weekend at the University of Maine at Augusta’s Bangor campus, but the school said no students or staff were ever in danger.
The shooting occurred late Saturday night into early Sunday morning in a rarely used parking lot on Taft Street, Communications Associate Vice President Brent Wooten said.
The two people involved in the shooting were living in their cars, which were parked in that unused lot. The person shot is recovering, Bangor police Sgt. Jason McAmbley said.
No students live on campus, and there was never any danger to students, staff or faculty, because of when the shooting happened, Wooten said.
There has been a homeless encampment for at least two years on neighboring property owned by the city of Bangor, Wooten said. The school hasn’t previously experienced any major issues involving people living in the encampment.
There are security cameras on campus, as well as a privacy barrier between the school property and the encampment, Wooten said.
An investigation is ongoing, so no additional information is available, McAmbley said.
