The man who shot a sheriff’s deputy in an Androscoggin County town early Wednesday was prohibited from possessing guns, police said.
Corey Hamel, 42, of Minot, is accused of shooting at Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputies as they were escorting homeowners away from a house fire around 4:05 a.m. Wednesday, Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said.
The house at 1089 Woodman Hill Road was engulfed in flames when deputies arrived for a complaint of a disturbance. Hamel was at the end of the driveway and started shooting, hitting Sgt. Randy Williams and several vehicles, Moss said.
Williams was shot in his upper right leg and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he is being treated. The homeowners were not injured in the shooting.
Police confronted Hamel and arrested him at the end of the driveway, Moss said. He was not injured.
Hamel was staying at the home, police said. He was on probation for three different violations of conditional release and was thus prohibited from possessing guns. Hamel is not listed as the owner of the property, according to town records.
He is scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m. Friday on charges of aggravated attempted murder and arson.
Hamel was charged with attempted arson in July 2017, after he allegedly poured gasoline in the interior of his house and said he would light it on fire, the Sun Journal reported.
