Aspen Dental announced Thursday that patients’ personal information may have been stolen in a ransomware attack on the company.
The Chicago-based dental care provider has locations in Auburn, Augusta, Bangor, Biddeford, Ellsworth, Portland, South Portland, Thomaston, Topsham and Waterville.
In a news release, Aspen Dental Management, Inc. said it notified federal law enforcement of the data breach and started an investigation with third-party cybersecurity experts.
Data that may have been taken include: “Social Security number, driver’s license/state ID information, health information, health insurance information, date of birth, bank financial data, biometric data, and other sensitive information.”
Aspen Dental started mailing letters notifying its customers on Thursday and “will provide information about the incident and steps individuals can take to monitor and protect their personal information.”
The company said it “has no evidence that any information has been misused,” but said “concerned individuals” can review the Federal Trade Commission’s website at identitytheft.gov/# for tips on keeping personal information safe.
Aspen Dental is offering free credit monitoring to notified people whose Social Security numbers may have been affected.
Customers can a temporary toll-free call center in the next 90 days with any questions about the incident at 833-919-3310 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
