The North Atlantic Conference champion Husson men’s and Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball teams were ousted from the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday night by the host schools.
New York University’s Violets topped the Husson men 82-61 while the Smith College women beat MMA 62-46 in Northampton, Mass.
In the men’s game, All-American guard Spencer Freedman poured in 29 points and also dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds to lead NYU past Husson.
NYU, now 21-5, will face Tufts in the second round on Saturday.
Husson of Bangor wound up 23-6.
Emmanuel Onuama contributed 16 points and he also had 13 rebounds and three steals, both game-highs.
Zay Freeney chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Scott Lewis’ 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots paced Husson. Jeremy Moronta netted 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He also had three assists and two steals.
Andre McCauley, Riles Neff and Eric Ahlers each had eight points.
Neff, an All-NAC first team selection, sustained a lower body injury in the second half and wound up playing just 16 minutes on the evening.
Ahlers had six rebounds, Neff had three assists and two rebounds and McCauley had three rebounds.
Derek Collin had seven points and six rebounds.
Husson shot just 33.3 percent from the floor and from the 3-point arc and was outrebounded 46-36.
The Eagles trailed by 10 at the half but used an 18-6 run to take a lead early in the second half before the Violets put the game away with a 20-0 spurt.
In the women’s game, senior guard Ally Yamada scored a game-high 17 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, as the Pioneers advanced to face Messiah University (Pa.) in Saturday’s second round game at 7.
It was the fourth straight opening-round win for the 26-3 Pioneers.
MMA finished up at 22-5.
Yamada also had five rebounds and five assists.
Hannah Martin scored 13 points and also had four rebounds and Sofia Rosa registered 10 points and six rebounds. Jessie Ruffner tallied eight points, nine rebounds and three assists and Jane Loo also had nine rebounds to go with six points and two assists.
Erianna Moore’s 17 points, two rebounds and two assists led the Mariners.
Maria Barela had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists and Sydney Briscoe produced 10 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
The Pioneers outrebounded MMA 42-27 and shot 42.1 percent from the floor compared to Maine Maritime Academy’s 35.2 percent.
