I believe Sen. Chuck Schumer’s speech on Israel was courageous and persuasive. He clearly has a deep love for and understanding of Israel, and he wants it to continue to thrive. But at the same time he acknowledges what I think we all must know, whether we say it aloud or not.
What is happening in Gaza is more than a tragedy. It is a horror that must be stopped. It’s an unacceptable attack on the humanity of a people. I believe no military goals can justify so many deaths of innocent women and children, the starvation of an entire people, and the cruel destruction of a nation.
Historically, the intention was for two states to exist side by side, and Schumer spoke eloquently about the need to make that happen. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stood in the way of that solution even before Oct. 7, a solution that seems to be a way to insure dignity for both peoples, which is what I believe was intended when Israel was created after World War II.
I do not want my country to support human-caused famine in Gaza. To have trucks full of food parked and waiting idly so close to people who are starving is a cruel picture I cannot bear. I hope the U.S. will take stronger measures to convince Netanyahu to stop this madness. I hope the Israeli people will stand up and object to what is happening in Gaza before they completely lose the world’s support.
