Kevin Frazier wrote a column that appeared in the Bangor Daily News opinion pages recently about amending the U.S. Constitution, “Learning from your mistakes.”
So many people are unhappy with the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms. The 14th Amendment took a battering recently for a little used insurrection provision. The First Amendment is under pressure as freedom of religion enters the political field … with Christianity now getting a bad name. Maybe we don’t trust in God any more.
Free speech in the internet age obviously needs definition. It used to be that you couldn’t shout “fire” in a theater. That was the only protected speech … if I remember my constitutional law course at Georgetown. Today, many others seek protection for or from speech they like or dislike.
Why don’t we take these issues out of the fractious political arena, and all agree to a constitutional convention. Our republic is going into its third century and has worked pretty well. A tune-up wouldn’t hurt and might be a venue to ventilate strong feelings without taking it to the streets.
