Passerbys helped get an older couple out of an SUV after it caught fire on Interstate 95 on Monday morning.
An 82-year-old Milford man was driving south on I-95 around 10 a.m., with his 81-year-old wife as a passenger, when the car caught fire near mile marker 189 in Veazie, Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said.
When the man tried to brake, the 2016 Kia Sorento did not initially stop, Moss said. He was able to get the car to the right side of the road, and it was fully engulfed in flames when troopers arrived on scene.
The Milford couple was able to get out of the car with help from the passersby, Moss said. No one was injured.
The interstate was shut down for about 30 minutes as the Bangor Fire Department put the flames out.
