A Lewiston woman died Monday, four days after being struck by an SUV.
Margaret “Peggy” Pooler, 57, was hit by a vehicle while walking in the Sabbatus/College Street area around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Lewiston police said last week. Pooler was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in serious condition.
She died of her injuries at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, her family told the Sun Journal.
The driver of the SUV has not been charged, but the crash is under review by the district attorney’s office, the Sun Journal reported. Details are unclear, though witnesses said Pooler was in the street earlier in the day asking drivers for money.
Pooler, who was homeless, was well-known in the area and spent time at a local warming shelter. Linda Doucette Scott, who worked in the shelter at the Calvary United Methodist Church, told the newspaper Pooler was a regular who cared deeply for her cat.
A fundraiser by her family for medical costs described her as generous and a friend to many.
