A Levant man was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly fired several shots in an hours-long standoff with police.
Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on South Levant Road in Levant at 10 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a domestic violence assault, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said the alleged domestic assault did not involve the use or threat of a weapon and deputies were able to help remove the alleged victim, a woman, from the scene. But the man was not cooperative, and while police were considering their next steps, he fired several shots from the residence, according to the sheriff’s office.
South Levant Road was closed by police through the afternoon. Suzanne M. Smith Elementary School, located South Levant Road, was a short distance from the standoff but was not involved “nor was anyone there in immediate danger,” police said.
Tactical teams from the sheriff’s office and Maine State Police came to the scene and planned an approach to the home. The man came out at one point but refused to surrender and extended the standoff, according to police.
Ultimately the man, Nicholas Bennett, 34, of Levant was taken into custody. He was brought to Penobscot County Jail and charged with domestic assault. The sheriff’s office anticipated filing additional charges.
No one was injured during the standoff, according to police.
