Annlinn Kruger’s letter in the Bangor Daily News, “COA encampment takes thoughtful approach” was written by a self-described American Jew and Zionist. I think she rightly describes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government’s actions against the Palestinian people as constituting “crimes against humanity at best and genocide at worst.”
President Joe Biden recently made a statement about the campus protests across the U.S. that have become chaotic and violent in some instances. He said that dissent and Americans’ right to freedom of speech are essential to democracy, but that protests should be peaceful and follow the rule of law.
Although the Biden administration is trying by diplomatic means to bring about a cease-fire, release of hostages and eventually a two-state resolution, not much progress has been made. As long as the U.S. sends Israel offensive weapons and money, our government is aiding Netanyahu and his government in their unrelenting destruction of Gaza. What about supporting human rights and international rules of war? How can we expect students to protest peacefully while our government is contributing to the chaos and destruction and deaths in Gaza?
