Construction on a 40-unit affordable housing building for seniors on Milford Street in Bangor will begin next month, the city announced on Tuesday.
The building is part of an affordable housing complex behind Mary Snow School that will include a total of 80 units. Penquis, a Bangor-based social services agency, has been working to build it for years.
The two three-story buildings will be built off Milford Street Extension, a short road that runs from Essex Street to the Mary Snow School parking lot.
The first building, Milford Place, is slated to hold 40 one-bedroom units for adults ages 55 and older. Rent for the units will be affordable for people who are making 60 percent of the area median income or less, as set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The city will likely allocate $200,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding to the Penquis project. Community Development Block Grant is a federal program that helps states and communities fund developments that aid low- and moderate-income families.
The other forthcoming building in the complex, Essex View, will hold 40 units of two- and three-bedroom apartments for workforce and family housing.
