The Bangor Rams have a new varsity boys basketball coach.
Aaron Pinckney will take over the program, Bangor athletic director Steve Vanidestine confirmed.
Pinckney is a Philadelphia native who first arrived in Maine in 2001 as a prep basketball player for Coach Karl Henrikson at Maine Central Institute.
After a collegiate career at East Stroudsburg University (NCAA Division II) in Pennsylvania, Pinckney returned to Maine to serve as a teacher and coach in the Ellsworth school system.
Pinckney coached the Ellsworth freshman boys team for close to 10 years, and coached the girls junior varsity team at Ellsworth last year. Pinckney has also served as a coach with the Black Bear North AAU program.
Pinckney replaces Brad Libby, who stepped down in March after five seasons with the program. The Rams won the Class AA state championship in 2019, but have gone just 9-47 over the past three seasons.
“He knows basketball very well. I think it’s a good hire,” longtime Ellsworth boys varsity head coach Peter Austin said. “He’ll put his heart and soul into it.”
