A Deer Isle man was arrested Monday after he allegedly led police on a short chase in a stolen car.
Jon McDowell, 37, has been charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, driving to endanger, operating after suspension and failing to report an accident, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
McDowell was spotted driving a red Chevrolet Equinox, reported stolen from a Deer Isle residence, north of Blue Hill Road in Surry on Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday morning.
When he allegedly didn’t stop for deputies, they briefly pursued him until stopping because of potential “danger to the public.”
Officers later found the Equinox overturned off Surry Road, and no one was inside the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
McDowell was tracked to a residence south of the crash site, where he was arrested.
He was taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth.
