A treehouse and zipline make this $1.5 million midcoast mansion built by a famous basketball shooting guru one of the most interesting listings on the Maine housing market right now.
The hilltop home on Jordan Drive in Boothbay Harbor was constructed in 2006 by Dave Hopla, a former assistant coach with four NBA teams who also personally instructed Hall of Famers including the late Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and Ray Allen, the sharpshooter who won a 2008 championship with the Boston Celtics.
Hopla, who was dubbed “the best shooter in the universe” by longtime NBA coach George Karl, built this 5,300-square-foot house mansion on a hill with panoramic views of the town and harbor.
“They really spared no expense,” listing agent Jeremy Lock of Waypoint Brokers Collective in Portland, said. “They certainly picked up big pieces and had them imported from their worldly travels. So it’s got a different vibe to it, with all of these global design elements.”
Hopla called this place home until 2020. It’s ideal for those who want to live near the ocean but are wary of sea level rise, Lock said. Concerns about flooding and the routine maintenance that comes along with it attracted the current owners to the property. They listed it this past week.
Other selling points of the 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom home include its spacious 6-acre wooded lot, the climate-controlled wine cellar and it only being a 20 minute walk from town. There is also a two-story treehouse out back decked out with sleeping bunks, a heat pump, an outdoor shower, a fridge and even a zipline leading from the treehouse to the edge of the property.
“It is unquestionably the coolest treehouse I’ve ever seen,” Lock said.
The home was a second residence to its current owners, who would travel up from their home in Washington, D.C., to live here seasonally. They’re selling it because they’re getting older and don’t come up as often as they expected to, Lock said.
At this high price point, Lock expects it’ll take the home a while to sell. But people are certainly looking: the property is generating buzz online already, Lock said.
“It’s not cookie cutter in a good way,” he said. “It’s unique without going overboard.”
