For as long as anyone can remember, Mainers have been fortifying their homes against the chill of winter, maximizing the efficiency of their home heating systems in order to keep the cold outside where it belongs.
As climate change continues to wreak havoc on the predictability of seasonal weather patterns in the state, however, an equally important element in home maintenance has come into focus: keeping your house cool during increasingly hot summers.
What was once something only folks in more southern climes had to contend with, Mainers today can expect temperatures to soar above 90 degrees regularly during the summer months, which can be dangerous for many folks, especially young children and older people. This week, the humidity will make it feel like 100 degrees or more throughout much of the state, and the heat wave is not expected to break until Friday.
