Open letter to the Supreme Court of the United States: Please explain to the American people, your employers, why, in the case Trump v. U.S., you decided that after 248 years of established law and custom, the president is apparently above the law, beyond accountability. I know, there are legal wrinkles, whys, and wherefores, but I don’t speak legalese, and so I ask that you explain your decision in plain American English that I and America’s farmers and cattlemen, fishermen, plumbers, auto mechanics, pilots, soldiers and sailors, bus drivers, public school teachers and police officers, the men and women who pay your salaries and benefits, can understand.

I was taught in school and at home that the American Revolution was about creating a nation whose president was a common citizen, not a king. In the words of Thomas Paine, the voice of the American Revolution, that was America’s unique Common Sense. But apparently to you Paine was wrong, and we have all been mistaken these many years. That is, you perceive the United States more like England, a democracy with a king, in effect a monarchy.

Or have I misunderstood you? If so, you will understand why I ask you to explain what it is about your decision that I am not getting, that I expect many of us are not getting. And please, do this not in black robes locked away in chamber. Come out the door of 1 First Street, NE in Washington and speak among us as one of us, which you are.
