Ace Flagg is making another move headed into his senior year of high school.

Flagg, a former 2022 Maine Class A state champion with Nokomis who transferred to Montverde with twin brother Cooper Flagg prior to his sophomore year, will be playing for Greensboro Day School — home of the 12-time North Carolina state champion Bengals — this winter.

The 17-year-old Newport native won a 2024 national championship with Montverde Academy in Florida.

Ace Flagg came off the bench for the Eagles this past season, averaging 2.6 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.4 assists across 27 appearances. He averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 16 games for Montverde in 2022-23.

“I will miss my guy [Ace], but I’m happy for him,” Montverde associate head coach Kevin Boyle Jr. said in an Instagram story on Monday afternoon. “He will showcase his game this season and I’m excited to watch him have a successful college career.”

At Greensboro, the 6-foot-7 forward will be coached by Freddy Johnson, who has been with the Bengals for 48 seasons. Recognized by the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 with the Morgan Wootten Lifetime Achievement Award, Johnson has amassed the seventh most all-time wins as an American high school boys basketball coach, with a 1,190-328 overall record.

The Bengals reached the GEICO National High School Tournament in 2015 and 2017, and finished their 2024 campaign with a 24-13 record. They most recently won the Division 3A North Carolina state championship in 2023. Their alumni include three former NBA players: Wayne Robinson (class of 1976), Thomas Roberts (1989) and Justin Gainey (1996).

“Ace really wants to maximize his last year of high school basketball playing in an environment that will help him grow, but also challenge him day in and day out in his pursuit to play Division I basketball,” said Flagg’s personal trainer, Matt MacKenzie of Eastern Maine Sports Academy in Veazie.

“Greensboro Day came highly recommended by several people we trust, and the style in which Coach Freddie Johnson runs his program will be a great fit for Ace. While he really enjoyed his two years at Montverde, he felt like this move made the most sense for him and it will give him an opportunity to make a huge impact in helping a very successful program get over the top.”

Flagg has offers to play Division I basketball at the University of Maine, the University of West Virginia, George Washington University, Florida Gulf Coast University, St. Joseph’s University (Pennsylvania) and the University of Richmond.

This summer, Flagg has been playing for the White Mamba 17U AAU team based out of Boston, coached by retired Celtic Brian Scalabrine. The team went undefeated at the Zero Gravity 17U Finals in Boston June 8-9, with Flagg winning tournament MVP.
