BANGOR – Penobscot Community Health Care recently received $80,000 in grant funding from the Maine Cancer Foundation to support a project titled “Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening in Primary Care”. PCHC is the largest federally qualified health center in Maine serving an average of 60,000 patients each year.
PCHC was selected to receive funding from the Maine Cancer Foundation in July to increase colorectal cancer screening rates by providing patient and provider education, outreach, improved documentation and by supporting patients with transportation to attend their screening appointments.
“Thank you to the Maine Cancer Foundation for this generosity and commitment to improve colorectal cancer screenings,” said Susan Cheff MD, chief medical officer in response to the announcement of Maine Cancer Foundation’s award. “Colorectal cancer is a significant health concern here in Maine where we see higher than average cancer rates in general. Fortunately, we have very effective tools for screening, prevention, and early detection. Increasing awareness of this disease and access to screening services is vital to our success in reducing the impact of this disease and improving the lives of Mainers.”
