The 2024 presidential campaign is in full swing. I’m still amazed that we are being presented with the choice of two of the poorest candidates imaginable. The Republican Party, my former party, was given two very easy Democratic candidates to face for the White House and probably the chance to regain control of both chambers of Congress. Instead, Republicans choose Donald Trump, the only Republican whom I think Kamala Harris can defeat.
The race seems to be dead even now but both candidates are appealing to voters by offering Americans the thing they cherish the most, something for nothing, that is of course the great American dream now. Both Trump and Harris are promising more deficit spending with neither party showing any concern for printing and borrowing the funds to pay for these promises. God only knows our congressional leaders are not going to oppose this spending as they want to be reelected.
My generation is the first in American history to leave the generations following them with less opportunity than we had by eating their seed corn. Whatever happened to the 1960 John F. Kennedy quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” JFK would likely be shaking his head now if he could see us.
