A Massachusetts man allegedly assaulted a man in Athens with brass knuckles and a baseball bat.
Michael Cote, 30, of Fall River, Massachusetts, has been charged with elevated aggravated assault and burglary, according to the Waterville Morning Sentinel.
Cote and the mother of his child allegedly went to a Hartland Road residence about 10:30 p.m. Friday to confront the 23-year-old man who Cote believed had sex with his 17-year-old daughter, the Sentinel reported.
The man lived in a camper on the property, which belonged to his parents.
When they arrived at the property, Cote allegedly knocked on the camper door, pulled him out and punched him in the head with brass knuckles, according to the Sentinel.
Cote then went back to his vehicle, and when he returned, he found the woman had a head injury and the victim holding a baseball bat. Cote hit the man again in the head, took the baseball bat and then struck him in the head, leaving the victim unconscious, the newspaper reported, citing a police affidavit.
Cote took the woman to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan, where she was treated for a head injury.
The 23-year-old also was taken to the Skowhegan hospital before being airlifted to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was being treated for injuries considered life-threatening but was expected to survive, according to the Sentinel.
The victim was unable to answer questions for police due to his injuries, the Sentinel reported.
Cote appeared in court in Skowhegan on Monday. He was being held at the Somerset County Jail in Madison on $10,000 bail.
